Prepare to be bowled over
Cumnock Bowling Club, which turns 142 this year, is launching a new campaign to get more young people interested in bowling – starting with a Junior Open Day this Sunday [25 April].
The club, which is one of the oldest in Scotland, is hoping to inspire a new generation of bowlers – and maybe even find a champion who could take Scotland to victory in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
As part of the ‘Get on the Green’ campaign the club will open its doors to youngsters and their families, who will be able to show off their skills in a series of challenges, including target practice on the green.
George Strachan, Past President of the Club, said:
“We're very excited about getting Cumnock families along to show them everything bowls has to offer. Bowling has an unfair reputation as being a sport for older people but this is not the case – our club has members of all ages. We want to show that bowls can be enjoyed by all of the family and I would urge anyone who is interested to come down and meet us on Sunday.”
Bowling clubs across Scotland are being helped to rejuvenate the sport by Taylor Bowls, the UK’s leading bowls manufacturer. Laura Heron, of Taylor Bowls, said:
“Bowling is one of the biggest participant sports and encourages a healthy lifestyle. Scotland has a strong reputation worldwide for the sport. In fact, we've won 21 medals at Commonwealth level, making us 3rd in the world.
"I'm sure people in Cumnock will have a fantastic day out, and hopefully someone from the region will go on to help Scotland add to it's tally of medals."
